Man, 31, arrested after woman 'fled from blazing car and plunged to her death from nearby bridge'

A MAN has been arrested after a woman is believed to have fled from a burning car and fallen to her death from a nearby bridge.

Police were called to the horror incident on the A21 in Kent at 2.34am this morning and found a woman had fallen to her death near the scene of the car fire.

Photos showed a burnt out vehicle on the A21 early this morning, close to the exit for Tonbridge.

A woman's body was found underneath a 50ft flyover near Morley's Roundabout.

Police are now investigating how the woman fell from the bridge and whether there is connection with the burnt out car and the woman's death.

A 31-year-old man, from London, has been arrested in connection with the incident.

Drivers were left stranded for around four hours this morning, as emergency services raced to the scene.

A spokesman for Kent Police said: "Detectives are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman who fell from a bridge on the A21 near Tonbridge.

"Kent Police was called at 2.34am to the A21, near an exit for Tonbridge, where a woman had fallen from a road bridge onto land below.

"The woman sustained serious injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene by South East Coast Ambulance Service.

"Kent Police officers are working to establish the full circumstances, including how the woman came to fall and any possible connection with the vehicle fire and her death.

"A 31-year-old man from London was arrested in connection with the incident. He remains in custody. The A21 is currently closed to all traffic in both directions, between the Morleys roundabout and the Tonbridge bypass, while enquiries at the scene continue."

Two fire engines were called to the vehicle on fire at 2.20am.

They put the blaze out and left the scene at 3.40am.

A fire service spokesman said: "Kent Fire and Rescue Service was called to a vehicle fire on the A21 near Tonbridge. Two fire engines attended and crews extinguished the fire."

Drivers faced lengthy queues this morning.

One motorist, who was stuck for four hours, said: "I got there at about 2.40am.

"Emergency services were already on the scene and traffic had been halted so there were about 20 vehicles between myself and the accident. A helicopter appeared a few times but didn't land.

"At about 6.15am, a police officer came and took the details of everyone in the queue.

"Traffic officers finally let the cars and vans turn around and head the wrong way up the dual carriageway at about 6.40am."
