Cost of 118 118 calls set to fall by 70 per cent in victory for The Sun

THE cost of a call to directory enquiries service 118 118 is set to fall by 70 per cent in a victory for The Sun.

Ofcom said customers, especially pensioners, pay too much to find out a telephone number.

118 118 charges around £11 to make a 90-second call. This will be limited to £3.10 under the proposals.

The cap applies to other providers and will be under consultation until August 22. Currenty callers must also pay an access charge of 10p to 58p a minute to their phone provider.

Last year we told how a call to 118 118 is 12 times dearer than a premium-rate sex line. 118 118 declined to comment on the latest proposals.

David Hickson, of the Fair Telecoms Campaign, welcomed the announcement, saying: "Consumers should avoid all rip-off services, taking care to choose the right contact number and the best service for their needs.

“We know this can be difficult and we look forward to more help from effective regulation.” An Ofcom spokesman said: “We’re concerned about rising prices for directory enquiries, and callers paying much more than they expect. So we’re taking action to protect consumers by proposing a cap on the cost of 118 numbers.”
